5.0 Federation Membership and Responsibilities
The federation of IMD participants can be most effective in achieving the goal of an integrated, accessible, comprehensive microbial database if there is active participation and coordinated effort by key international groups with expertise in various aspects of polyphasic taxonomy and databases, as well as individuals with particular expertise. The key groups represented at the workshop, with their attendees agreeing to be members of the Federation, were the Deutsche Sammlung von Microorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH (DSM), the World Data Center for Microorganisms (WDCM) and Japan Society of Culture Collections (JSCC), the Laboratory for Microbiology at the University of Munich, the Laboratory for Microbiology at the University of Gent, the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), the E. coli Genetic Stock Center Database (CGSC atYaleUniversity), the Ribosomal Database Project (RDP) at the Universityof Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Bergey's Manual Trust, and the Centerfor Microbial Ecology (CME) at Michigan State University. The responsibilities of the Federation members are to: (i) work towards a common integrated database; (ii) share in the division of labor as negotiated among the members; (iii) collaborate with other members to achieve specific objectives; and (iv) participate in seeking funds for Federation objectives.
