1.0 Introduction

An international workshop to discuss interconnectivity among microbiology databases was held August 11-12, 1995, at Michigan State University. The workshop was sponsored by the Center for Microbial Ecology with the goals of: (i) considering the impact of interconnected databases; (ii) defining and prioritizing requirements necessary to accomplish connectivity; and (iii) establishing strategies for implementation of an integrated microbial database system. The workshop was attended by members of the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC), Argonne National Laboratories, Bergey's Manual Trust, Bionomics International, the Center for Microbial Ecology (CME), the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSM), the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Ribosomal Database Project, the Technical University of Munich, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Gent (Belgium), the University of Washington, the World Data Center for Microorganisms (WDCM) (Tokyo), and Yale University. Three different approaches to developing such a database system were described at the workshop. This document summarizes the presentations of these model database systems and highlights workshop of discussions about the value and feasibility of such an effort.
